Millar David Jr. Proof.jpg

Flight Lieutenant David Millar Jr.

David Millar Jr. was born on July 23, 1921. He was working for Sinclair and Valentine, an ink supply company. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1942 and was trained as a wireless operator in Tofino, B. C. Part of his job there was to search for subs and enemy ships off Canada’s west coast. He also served in Burma in 435 Squadron. It was a RCAF transport squadron formed in 1944 that operated the Douglas Dakota (DC-3) to support the British 14th Army during the reconquest of Burma. They flew vital supply missions, dropping cargo via parachute or delivering directly into difficult-to-reach areas, flying just above the treetops to avoid detection by the enemy. It was a challenging assignment that sometimes saw them flying in cloudy conditions, hoping the clouds parted enough to see the mountains rising just in front of them before they flew right into them.

He was demobilized in 1945 and returned to civilian life in Canada. He returned to his job at Sinclair and Valentine (they held his job for him while he was at war and hired him back once he returned from active service) and had three sons. He worked at Sinclair and Valentine until he retired.

We thank him for his service.

We will remember them.
