Ernest Charles Lardner     B45786      Sergeant

Sergeant Ernest Charles Lardner turned 18 on May 7th, 1940, two months prior to when he enlisted in the British Army on July 8, 1940.  He joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, an Infantry regiment. After basic training, he served from September 1941 to July 1943 in Jamaica on garrison and armoury duties. They moved back to the UK in July that year to start training for the invasion of Europe. 

On July 22, 1944, they landed in Europe as part of the 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Armoured Division. They served in various engagements with the enemy in northwestern Europe for the duration of the war. On September 18, 1945, he returned to the UK, and was finally discharged from service just in time for Christmas in Toronto. He was awarded the France and Germany Star, The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal 1939-1945. 

Once he had settled in Canada, he married Mary Burns. They had three children: Bonnie, Cameron, and Lyle. He died August 4, 1969.
