Gordon Caverly Scowcroft

Gordon Caverly Scowcroft was born on June 3, 1917, in Bosman, near Swan River, Manitoba. He married Muriel Patricia Burns in August 1942, with their wedding announced in a Saskatoon newspaper. The couple honeymooned near Chilliwack, British Columbia, where Gordon was training before heading overseas.

Gordon sailed from Halifax in July 1943 aboard the Queen Mary, which had been converted to transport troops, and continued training in England. In September 1944, he was captured by German forces in Belgium and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war in a camp outside Frankfurt. He was held until the end of the war in May 1945. During this time, Gordon did not see his eldest daughter, who was three years old by the time he returned home.

Gordon and Muriel raised five children: Gail Toth, Barbara Twaits, Duncan Scowcroft, Maggie Hillmer, and Peter Scowcroft. Gordon passed away on July 1, 1988.

We thank him for his service.
