Corporal Herbert Frederick Ritchie
Herbert Frederick Ritchie was born in Toronto on October 5, 1915. He served in the Second World War with the Toronto Scottish Regiment, a machine-gun battalion attached to the 1st and 2nd Canadian Infantry Divisions.
The Regiment provided machine-gun support for the 2nd Canadian Division’s assault on Dieppe on August 19, 1942, during Operation Jubilee. Later in the war, the unit added a company of mortars and continued to support rifle battalions in northwest Europe from July 1944 (landing in France on July 6 and 7) until V-E Day, May 8, 1945.
Corporal Ritchie was discharged on December 6, 1945, and received the Canadian Volunteer Medal and Clasp (1939–1945) and the France and Germany Stars.
After the war, Herbert enjoyed golf and curling, and together with his wife, Verna, volunteered with the Boy Scouts of Canada. He passed away on October 29, 1999, and is buried in Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto.
We thank him for his service.
We will remember them.
