James Costello

James Costello volunteered to serve with the Royal Canadian Army in 1940. He was first stationed in Ottawa, Ontario, with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps before sailing to England to complete further military training.

Fluent in Italian, he later transferred to a Canadian Army unit where his language skills proved invaluable. In 1943, he was deployed to Sicily, taking part in the Italian Campaign and contributing to the Liberation of Italy.

During his service, Sergeant Costello was promoted and appointed as a Scout and Interpreter. In this role, he travelled ahead of advancing troops, gathering and reporting critical intelligence on enemy positions and numbers. His dedication, courage, and skill earned him several medals and merit badges in recognition of his service.

Sergeant James Costello was honourably discharged in 1945, having served his country with distinction.
