Born on April 22, 1912, in Morriston, Ontario, Lewis James Gregor was the youngest of four children. He attended S.S. No. 8 Public School in Morriston before continuing his education at Galt Collegiate Institute, where he completed Grade 13—travelling daily by train to attend classes.
Before enlisting, Lewis worked on the family farm and trained as a stationary (marine) engineer. He spent two years working with Canada Steamship Lines and one year as a yard engineer with the T.H. & B. Railway.
In May 1942, he married Iva Maltby. Shortly after, on July 22, 1942, he enlisted with the Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles in London, Ontario. He was later transferred to the 28th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, and trained in Petawawa. On September 20, 1943, he qualified as a Motor Mechanic (B1) and was subsequently transferred to Valcartier to fill a heating engineer position.
Lewis served overseas in the Netherlands until the end of the war. He returned to Toronto on November 23, 1945, and was honourably discharged on January 19, 1946.
Following his service, he returned home and purchased a farm, where he worked for the rest of his life. Lewis passed away on July 9, 1999, and is buried at Crown Cemetery in Puslinch, Ontario.
He and his wife Iva raised three children: Lewis S., Dennis J., and Janice S.
Beyond his work and service, Lewis was also a talented artist and an accomplished violinist, performing with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra.
We thank him for his service and his sacrifice.
We Will Remember Them.
