Lloyd Penrose Sonley, Leading Aircraftman,   R165597

LAC Lloyd Penrose Sonley was born May 31, 1917, in Pinedale, Brock Township, Region of Durham, grew up in nearby Blackwater, and became a farmer. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on April 25, 1942, in Toronto. He was sent to Galt for initial training as an airframe mechanic. June 19, 1942, he “completed course in service” and was sent to St. Thomas for 4 months more training. 

In October 1942 he was transferred to Base Borden near Barrie where he completed 40 months service in Canada on various flight training stations, servicing and maintaining the training aircraft as well as conducting workshops on aircraft maintenance. He was awarded the Participation Medal for his service and was discharged September 2, 1945. 

He married Lorna Galloway on May 15, 1953, in Oshawa, and they had four children: Arthur Lloyd, Christopher Robin, Heather Maria and Stewart George. Lloyd worked as a grader operator for Miller Paving at locations throughout Ontario. His favourite pastimes were golfing, playing pool, playing cards, and puttering in the garage. He died on Aug. 11 at Uxbridge Cottage Hospital and is buried in Pinedale United Cemetery, Brock Township. He can be found by FindAGrave – Memorial ID #139598624.
