Stanley George Dennis - Royal Canadian Navy
Stan was born in Toronto, Ontario, on April 5, 1918. He attended school in Toronto, and upon graduation from Danforth Collegiate he worked for the Canadian Postal Service. When World War Two was declared, Stan and his best friend, Tom McNaughton, signed up for duty together in the Royal Canadian Navy. They completed their naval training, and because Stan had experience with mail duty he was assigned to the Royal Canadian Postal Duty. It’s a vital part of any war effort, although largely ignored. Letters to and from home remind service personnel of their families back home.
Stan was deployed in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and at the time it was still a British colony. It was there that he met the woman who would become his wife, Genevieve. Once he was transferred to Liverpool, Nova Scotia Genevieve went too, and they were married on July 23, 1943. One year later their first child, daughter Susan, was born. After VE Day, Stan’s job was to dismantle the post office. He signed up for duty in the Pacific as the war with Japan continued. However, he never saw active service there because peace was declared before he could ship out.
Stan returned to Ontario, and he and Genevieve, pregnant with her second child, and Susan moved to Richmond Hill. Two more children completed the family. He continued his employment with the Canadian Post Office until his retirement. Stan is buried next to his wife in Elgin Mills cemetery in Richmond Hill.
We thank him for his service.
We will remember them.
