Walter Markew, Signalman, Reg # B-124986

Walter Markew was born in Toronto on March 11, 1924. He attended Central Technical School, and after graduation worked at York Knitting Mills in Toronto.

He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals on May 14, 1943 and did basic training at Base Borden. At that time, members of the RCCS were responsible for setting up radio equipment and signalling infrastructure at Camp X, on the shores of Lake Ontario near Oshawa. Many of these signallers became involved in clandestine work with Sir William Stephenson and Pat Bayly. He was responsible for laying down wire for communication while stationed in Europe. He survived the war, and was honourably discharged on May 30, 1946, receiving the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and Clasp, as well as the War Service Second Class Badge.

After the war Walter returned to Toronto where he worked briefly as a TTC streetcar driver. However, opportunities at the Canada Wire and Cable Company served him well, and he worked there as a supervisor until his retirement. He lived in Leaside, married to Elizabeth, and they had 2 children, Donna and Michael. Once retired he and Elizabeth moved to Uxbridge, where they lived out their days. Walter, predeceased by Elizabeth, died on March 9th, 2014, 2 days before his 90th birthday.

We thank him for his service.

We will remember them.
